THE HISTORY

The original Land Rover vehicle was designed in 1947 by Maurice Wilks. This car was called simply “Land Rover” and did not include the terms such as “Defender” and “Series” until the 1990s. The chief designer at the Rover Company, Wilks, had been influenced by Jeep and his prototype, nicknamed “Centre Steer”, was built on the chassis and axles of a Jeep with help from his brother Spencer Wilks, the managing director of Rover. Military surplus supplies of aircraft cockpit paint influenced the first choice of colour for the car so they came in shades of light green. Vehicles such as the Series I was field-tested at Long Bennington and designed to be field-serviced.

As a company, Land Rover has existed since 1978 and before this was a product on the line of the Rover Company. The Rover Company was subsequently absorbed into the Rover-Triumph division of the British Leyland Motor Corporation (BL) after the takeover of Rover in 1967 by Leyland Motor Corporation.

Land Rover’s commercial success through its series models and later Range Rover prompted the split of the Land Rover company from BL; however, it remains under the BL umbrella, remaining part of the subsequent Rover Group in 1988, owned by British Aerospace after the remains of British Leyland were broken up and privatised.
